The above pix shows the paint pails fastened over the holes in the shutter. The white paint was just a quick and dirty method to mark the shutters for drilling. You can just make out the flat head phillips screws fastening the pails to the shutter in the rim of the pails.
Above is an assembled box (sans soil and plants and covering). The fill tube is on the right and the overflow hole is front and center (actually two 1/2" holes). The window screen was added to keep small particulates from falling into the reservoir. The screen isn't really necessary if the fill tube is used for replenishing the water reservoir; but if small bore tubing is used with an automatic system, it probably is necessary.
